Origins of LOST
WHAT HAPPENED
''A little bit of this same light is inside every man. But they always want more.''
"Can man can possess this light?"
''No. But they can try. And if they try they can put it out. And if it goes out here, it goes out everywhere.''
We've always known that The Island is a fundamentally spiritual place — one that defies human understanding, and cookie-cutter interpretation. On Tuesday, LOST all but confirmed this Spirit in the great light — at the same time emphasizing anyone who claims to know who or what God is, is probably wrong.
As the Doc writes: "LOST just doesn't trust human beings enough to know ''the right answer.'' We are too flawed, too damaged, too biased, too selfish, too incapable, too limited, too mortal, just plain too much of this world to be able to really and fully know what this world is really all about. I don't think LOST is saying to stop pursuing truth. Not at all. I think it's more concerned with how we conduct our search and how we can labor with our neighbor in their search... Because lord knows that the bloody, brutal fight over all this stuff remains more troubling and terrifying than ever."
FACTS CONFIRMED
- Jacob and the Man In Black are twin brothers.
- Adam and Eve revealed! No it's not Bernard and Rose, but MIB and his Mother.
- The Ghost kid(s) we've seen earlier in Season Six is Jacob... and his brother.
- The dagger that MIB throws at the "wheel" well is the dagger Dogen gives to Sayid, the same one he asked Alpert to kill Jacob with and the same one he kills his Mother with.
- The Frozen Donkey Wheel was originally constructed by MIB to harness the light/electromagnetic energy.
- The source of immortality is the wine that Mother gives to Jacob, the same wine that he gives to Richard Alpert.
- The Smoke Monster originates when MIB is forced into the light cave. (More on this below)
- The Man in Black had actually been dead the entire time we've known him.
- The blue box game that Jacob and MIB play is the Egyptian board game known as Senet, ''the game of passing.'' Senet had religious significance to the Egyptians; it was placed in tombs as a talisman of protection in the afterlife.
BURNING QUESTIONS
1. Did Mother intentionally raise one of the boys to take her guardianship and the other to take her life? Did she manipulate pregnant Claudia to the island so this could take place? Is this The Island's cycle?
2. Is the Light the same as the electromagnetic energy? And if so, is this the primary reason why Charles Widmore has returned to The Island?
3. Consider the Sideways world and remember that The Island is a dead, sunken thing in the Sideways (2004) world. Did someone succeed in putting out the light in that world? And what does it mean that the castaway characters are now remembering their Island world experience?
4. We learned that MIB and his original people were responsible for designing — but not implementing — the donkey wheel mechanism that could move The Island and open worm holes/time warps to Tunisia. The episode didn't tell us who finished the project. Was it The Dharma Initiative?
THEORIES TO DISCUSS
- Becoming The Island's protector is a choice. The Island doesn't demand a guardian. It may seem like it needs one, but there's no charter that requires one. Discuss.
- ''One day, you can make up your own game and everyone else will have to follow your rules.'' Young MIB says to young Jacob. This statement offers a revelation about ''the rules'' that's just as important if not more so than the rules themselves: they are entirely subjective (or elastic). Many have assumed that ''the rules'' exist as rigid external truths that regulate all life on The Island, mortal or immortal, human or god-like. Not so. Remember the scene in Season Four, when Keamy assassinated Alex and Ben said, ''He changed the rules.'' We always thought Ben was referring to Charles Widmore. But after this week's episode maybe Ben was talking about Jacob. Discuss.
- Jacob's touchy-feely tampering and his idealistic redemption schemes have undermined castaway free will and kept them alive longer than what is right and proper. Seen from this point of view, MIB's assassinations are more like mercy killings and affirmations of the natural order of things. Discuss.
- Mother smashes MIB's head into the rock wall, then, in a sequence not shown to us, she apparently carries her son up the ladder, kills all MIB's people, then fills in the donkey wheel well with rocks. How? Mother was also the smoke monster. Discuss.
- MIB stabs his Mother in the back and through the chest. She falls to the ground and whispers a word: ''Nothing.'' Why? Discuss.
FAVORITE SCENES
Anything with Titus Welliver (MIB). I've had a man crush on this guy since Deadwood. The second half of the episode was noticeably stronger with Welliver and Pellegrino (Jacob). Also thought Allison Janney was great. I'm not a West Wing watcher, but her haunting/near catatonic performance in American Beauty is stand out.
Lots from Doc Jensen and Nikki Stafford here, props to them. Read up and Post away!
I'm going to try to post two columns for finale week. One for the final hour long episode and then a big synopsis following Sunday May 23's 2 ½ hour finale.

Did the Light grow noticeably dimmer once the Smoke Monster left? Is it possible that they are now both one and the same? If I remember correctly, when Locke first sees the Monster in the first season, he refers to it as seeing “into the heart of the island” and that it was “beautiful.” Everyone else, of course, refers to it as the “Monster” but that would mesh well with the nature of the Light (“good AND evil,” “life AND death,” “beautiful AND a monster” and so on). The Light is simply whatever you want from it. Now, the Man in Black, or at least his spirit perhaps, is part of this entity. If it were to leave the Island, as he wishes to, what would happen?
According to the Mother, the Light is what we are all made of, yet we all desire more. I think it’s possible to theorize that the Sideways world is the result of the Light spreading to the rest of the world rather than the Light being extinguished. Every character’s life has improved, at least in the sense that they have what they were lacking in the original timeline (Locke - a father figure, Hurley - Luck, Sawyer - using his conning skills for good, etc) but they are missing the more sincere qualities they gained through their trials in the original timeline. I suspect that not pressing the button in the Hatch, turning the donkey wheel, and, ultimately, the Incident have all stepping stones in releasing the Light to the world and allowing the Man in Black to leave and it’s now up to “The Candidate” to somehow negate it and take rightful place as protector of the Light. I think this leadership IS necessary in the Pandora’s Box everything-goes-batshit-if-released-style.
Additionally, I also think it’s possible that the Man in Black hasn’t been the Man in Black all along and the Light/Smoke Monster is its own entity capable of manipulating the weak to its own agenda, which I suspect would be no longer being protected by someone.
Also, quick side note, I was really expecting the Man in Black’s name to be revealed in this episode. Anyone else find this lack of full disclosure really suspicious/frustrating?
The scene where the mother gives the wine to Jacob was loaded with Biblical imagery, I think.
Has the Biblical story of Jacob and Esau been discussed here before? This episode certainly reminded me of it. Jacob and Esau were twins, sons of Isaac and Rebekah.
Isaac was planning to bestow a blessing on Esau (the eldest), but Rebekah wanted Jacob to receive it instead (Jacob was her favorite). Since Isaac was blind, she convinced Jacob to trick him into getting the blessing for himself.
Jacob was always so sure that their mother favored his brother. But what if she didn’t? What if she—like Rebekah—favored Jacob, and wanted him to guard the island all along, and manipulated the whole thing?
Another question: if Jacob’s brother has been dead all this time, then who was Jacob talking to when we first met them? It seems that that scene (the one in your picture, Adam) took place after their mother had been killed, right?

Anthony, I think MIB name will be revealed and be very significant, but I have no idea what it will be.
Anthony – great post. I just went back and watched the scene where the Smoke Monster emerges from the ‘light’. I’m not certain that the light remains dim, but when Smokey first rises the light not only dims, but almost disappears completely as if the Smoke was taking it with him. As your wrote, both beautiful and terrible.

I’m not convinced that sideways world is an improved world. I think it’s just different, with similar ups (Locke is engaged, has good relationship with father and downs (father is catatonic and it’s (sort of) Locke’s fault, Locke was hit by a car, etc).

I really want to know MIB’s name - I’m with you, but I have to believe the writers have withheld it intentionally at this point, so I’m cool with waiting a bit more.

Tracy – The Jacob and Esau analogy is relevant, thanks for posting it. Maybe MIB is Esau, but the casting call was for ‘Samuel’ – ‘God has Heard’

Most people seem to think all of the scenes with MIB, including the original beach scene from last season’s finale, occur after the Mother’s death. In other words, The posthumous Man in Black retained the ability to assume his human form, but Jacob confined him to the Island, believing the Island has to serve as a prison to restrict his “darkness”. Lots more here.
man, my brain hurts from all of this prolonged theorizing. :)
so, i don’t have anything to add, but i did want to say that there was a nice article in the new yorker last week about the composer of lost, michael giacchino and here is a short video explaining some of the effects he uses:

<span style=“font-size: x-small;”>the temple
that whole thing was bothering me….then i realized its possibly the “golden pool” jacob was supposed to protect
when mib went through it was tarnished though
so ben was the first “infected” person when they used it to bring him back…saying he could never return to dharma
which is why he seems so heartless and could take out dharma….
which is also why mib could convince him to go back and get locke and why ben had to “check in” with him when he returned…and how he knew where he was
also why jacob never met ben face to face
mib knew he could use him to ultimatley kill jacob
so like claire and sayid he is one of mibs “people”....though we’ve seen some more free will as of late
I believe ben still may end up being the x factor

I’m sorry to say I still haven’t watched this episode. My DVR didn’t record it and I haven’t had time to watch online yet. Will I be lost tonight if I don’t watch it first?

paigniac - excellent post. so if the above scenario were true about ben, MIB, Jacob…would that mean Richard, who took Ben to be ‘healed’ at the temple was misled or being led by MIB?

elaine - watch it first if you can, but if not, just read the column above and google the episode…you’ll be fine.

Dollars to waffles says the study session will conclude that there is parking available in the Hill Street Parking Deck.
I can see requiring them to plug meters where they park, but the license fee thing sure sounds like some established business doesn’t like the competition and has an in with the city gummint staff.
As a teenager too broke to actually buy anything, I indulged in many a free cup of Kopi water.
This is pretty much ridiculous. However, I would hope that local businesses that aren’t opposed would step up and allow the Crave Truck in their private parking lots. That won’t solve the licensing issue though… (Insert not-so-subtle reference to Snell being behind the grand conspiracy to kill…
