Market Watch: July 31, 2010
It will be hard for MW to match its usual enthusiasm and glee and verbiosity regarding the Market this go-around. For those who have not yet heard, Market vendor and chocolate-maker extraordinaire Daniel Schreiber of Flatlander Chocolate passed away suddenly early this week. His passing leaves a huge hole in the Urbana-Champaign community, but especially its food community. He was full of ideas, often hilarious, had incredible physical and mental energy, inspired friends and acquaintances to consider trying something new and different, and he made damn fine chocolate.
The Market will be keeping Dan's space there empty for the rest of the season, save for the occasional performer, as Dan dug the performers at the Market. This weekend, the space will be set up to receive flowers, notes, cards, and any other remembrances fans and friends might want to drop by. The space is in Row 4, toward the north end, between Prairie Fruits Farm and Great Harvest Bread Co. Aw, Daniel, you were such an awesome guy. So many will miss you SO MUCH!
Here's a little list of what you'll be able to find this week: broccoli, beets, green beans, radishes, rainbow chard, kale, okra, green onions, cabbage, fresh herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, turnips, peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, early apples, eggplant, kohlrabi, raspberries, gooseberries, currants, sweet corn, potatoes, garlic, fresh whole onions, and who knows what else.
If you were looking for the Market tote bag last weekend but were denied, they're available once again for the low, low price of $8. There are still t-shirts available, though not in every size; more will be ordered this week. MW hears the City is accepting cash and checks only for these items, not their own Market money, which is kind of funny. MW also hears the City is considering shipping these items outside the area for former residents who desperately miss Urbana's Market.
