The Overture: August 30 - September 5
WHAT: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Telekinesis, Santah
WHERE: Canopy Club ($10)
WHEN: Wednesday, September 1st at 6:00 p.m.
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin are a touring fixture in Champaign-Urbana. Openers Telekinesis recorded their debut album with Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie), and this is likely going to be one of the biggest shows that Santah have played thus far.
WHAT: Roberta Sparrow, Bent Left, Pericles
WHERE: Mike 'N Molly's ($5)
WHEN: Thursday, September 2nd at 8:30 p.m.
You've seen Roberta Sparrow before? No? Let me tell you about them. They're one of the best hardcore bands in town. Their drummer sings. They've done spot-on sets of Alkaline Trio and NOFX at the Great Cover-Up. Pericles (Miami) and Bent Left (Kansas City) support.
WHAT: Jookabox, Sunset Stallion, Millimeter Mountain
WHERE: Canopy Club ($7)
WHEN: Thursday, September 2nd at 8:30 p.m.
For a group from Indianapolis, Jookabox's bizzare garage-psych is far too rare a sight in town. Opening will be folk-rockers Sunset Stallion (returning from a lengthy hiatus) and Millimeter Mountain (composed of several Mordechai in the Mirror members).
WHAT: Zmick, Mathien, Fifth World, Robbie Gold, Good Luck Tarzan, Wompstars
WHERE: Canopy Club ($7)
WHEN: Friday, September 3rd at 8:00 p.m.
If you've ever been to a Zmick show, you should know why a year after leaving town for Chicago, they're still able to pack the Canopy -- an amazing sense of community, off-beat covers, and major chops. They'll bring fellow Chicagoans Mathien, Fifth World, and Robbie Gold along for the ride. Good Luck Tarzan and Wompstars remain un-googleable at this point, but I see no reason to complain about (what I'm assuming to be) dubstep. Check back on Wednesday for an in-depth interview with Zmick.
WHAT: Withnail, Lonely Trailer, the Chemicals
WHERE: Mike 'N Molly's ($5)
WHEN: Saturday, September 4th at 8:30 p.m.
Withnail continue to hone their live chops with frequent gigs, while the Chemicals have, oddly enough, come close to dropping off our radar all-together. Add in Lonely Trailer and a cool night in the beer garden, and you've got an awesome, all-local night of music.
WHAT: Crane and Badger, TBA
WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)
WHEN: Saturday, September 4th at 10:00 p.m.
If you didn't know, Crane and Badger contains two of the members from the much loved Monster Honkey. While we're still waiting on a confirmation of the other bands on the bill, this promises to be an awesome night of heavy rock.

Lonely Trailer had to pull out from the 9/4 gig at Mike N Molly’s, so Ussop the Liar will be filling the opening slot instead. It’ll still be “an awesome all-local night of music” - just slightly different music.

Yeah, I’d agree that Transporter Room 3 is the worst house venue I’ve ever seen.
*slow. clap.* Still offering no threat of intelligence…. I know I said I thought you should just write this whole column yourself next year, Isaac, but now that you’ve gone and taken a “part deux” run at it, I’d like to modify my request: Best Music 2013,…
Actually, it’s kind of nice, the quiet. John Heoffleur’s engaging commentary/dialogue is sorely missed, however. In lieu of someone intelligent saying something, I’ve compiled a list of Honourable Mentions: BEST ROCK BAND: Take Care ::these gentlemen have four completely different sets at their disposal right now (which…
That article almost looks like something out of The Onion
Thanks! I’m looking forward to writing even more….
that city center house show was one of those life-affirming things.

I also got to visit Big Grove Tavern during the soft open and definitely enjoyed the pork belly the most of all the dishes I sampled. The cheesy grits and the vinegary pickled vegetables were a perfect compliment to the rich pork belly.
The Alan Partridge lookalike on the right in the first small photo has nothing to condescend to anyone about. AH HA!
Snell and the little Hitlers of the neighborhood association need to chill out. Legitimate businesses should have the freedom to exist without having to endure the slings and arrows of ignorant and misguided opposition.

Food trucks are the start-up, small businesses of the future for those unable to afford real estate. No surprise, that merchants who pay rent, utilities, and maintenance on a property would despise the traveling competition. Or developers who build more empty retail spaces would want to close…
Not so much far-right Tea Party as a balanced, moderate viewpoint between letting businesses succeed and protecting society with reasonable regulations. In spite of what the city reps are saying, the interpretation of policy on this issue certainly has changed. Letting a business start up under one…
I think it’s neat that SP has turned rightward, now espousing a Tea Party-style frustration with government regulations & taxes.
This makes me so sad. (Happy to live in Urbana, though!) Crave Truck has been a GREAT addition to the food choices in C-U, and it’d be a travesty to chase them away. This town should be supporting small businesses. I’m glad to hear that they’ll still…

And without bloodshed. Sounds like the Savoy trustees aren’t as narrow-minded as some of their whiny pants constituents. Do you think quack Snell is already planning an asinine counterattack or is he still laying low after those “threats” against his person?
Okay, almost 24 hours later and I finally got Issac’s Summer joke. I’m an idiot.
Swap the dog for a fire pit and it sounds like you’re writing about my back yard. Very nice.
