"Urbana deals with revenue loss by not filling vacant posts." Daily Illini, May 22 Because of the recession, the city of Urbana's revenue stream has been declining. One thing the city council has been doing to cope with the lost income is not filling vacant posts in city government after their occupants quit. This includes the police department, which currently has two vacant positions that will not be filled in the next fiscal year under the proposed budget.

"Budget plans put Urbana in red for at least a year," News-Gazette, February 8 The city council reviewed revised budget estimates on Monday night as the fiscal year nears its final quarter. Revenues such as sales taxes have not performed as officials estimated before the budget cycle began and other line items such as snow removal and fuel costs have gone beyond what was forecast - in all, creating a budget gap of about $225,000.
