Yes, it passed. Yes, there were Chamber of Commerce types at the meeting who are itching to tie bows on their shovels.Yes, there were farmers present who will likely lose some of their land. Here's what you didn't see on the 10 o'clock news... Despite the vote and the way the resolutions were worded, not all council members are for every part of the project. Charlie Smyth and David Gehrig both have concerns that the portion of the project that …
On Friday, April 16th, on the Campustown corner of Green and Wright, students, townies, and visiting moms witnessed what was probably a familiar sight: a group of people waiting for streetlights to change, and then running into the intersection and "dying." Die-ins have a rich history, and happen all over the world. Champaign-Urbana has had many: A.W.A.R.E holds them to protest the Iraq War; the Campus Greens have had them too. Friday was the National Day of Silence, and on …
After nearly four hours of citizen comments mostly opposing the Olympian Drive expansion project, the Urbana Council unanimously voted to forward resolutions authorizing agreements with the City of Champaign, Champaign County, and the Illinois Department of Transportation to spend $5 million to design and purchase land for the Olympian Drive expansion north of Urbana for a Council roll call vote on April 19. Mayor Laurel Prussing stressed that the city is not using city funds for this portion of the …
Jeremiah Ministries, located on Lincoln Avenue in Urbana, are glaad to announce the first anniversary of their opening. The church is affiliated with Revelations International, a world-wide organization of thinkers promoting "the message of Freedom from Jesus Christ through the power of homosexuality." "We're pleased that we have helped so many free their true nature from the mire of virtue and repression," gloats the Reverend Paul K. Johns. "There is so much good work still ahead of us." Reverend Johns …
Local software architect Susan Potter was feeling lonely working from home. Unmotivated and distracted, she was having trouble getting work done. She had tried business suites, but found them too nondescript and uninspiring. She had looked into renting an office, but was daunted by the cost. Finally, she heard about coworking, a recent trend where freelancers, entrepreneurs, remote workers, and others share one big office space, paying a fee (usually by the month) for a desk, access to the internet …
There are some people who let suffering get the best of them. Mike Benner is not one of those people. Benner is the interim office manager at the Greater Community AIDS Project in Champaign. He answers the phone cheerily every time, and his speech is peppered with laughter. He has deep brown eyes, a neatly trimmed beard and close-cropped charcoal hair. He’s also HIV-positive. “One of the reasons why I’m readily willing to let people know about my status is …
At a recent board meeting of the Greater Community AIDS Project, Mike Benner announced that one of the residents of “Champaign House” had been missing for five days. “We haven’t heard or seen him since the eighth of this month,” Benner said. “I did go up there and check to make sure there was no corpse or anything like that.” Although he had failed to check in as requested, the missing resident had returned to the house by April 17. …
For HIV and AIDS sufferers in Champaign-Urbana, taking care of their health requires a team of professionals. Marla Francisco, who is 46 years old and HIV-positive, moved to Champaign from Indianapolis in fall 2002. She contracted HIV in 2004 after what she called a “binge”: a relapse into using crack cocaine, during which she exchanged sex for drugs. She has been taking a drug called Atripla, which combines three different HIV medications into one, for about nine months, with minimal …
In the 1970s, my mother encouraged me and my sister to bake cookies and breads and sell them at our family's booth at the Champaign farmers' market so that we could earn money for college. For the last several years I have watched Alexandra Wright do the same thing at the Market at the Square in Urbana. But as good as Wright's peach muffins and blonde brownies are, I won't be buying them from her this year. And neither will …
"Shall Champaign County be authorized to impose a retailers’ occupation tax and a service occupation tax (commonly referred to as a “sales tax”) at a rate of 1 percent to be used exclusively for school facility purposes?" Students and faculty alike may want to pay close attention to the outcome of the elections on Tuesday. A proposed school sales tax increase to further fund school-based projects for all Champaign County schools will be on the April 7 Champaign County ballot. …

UPDATE: He got a lawyer and pled not guilty. The case is next up for trial or for pretrial (can’t tell) on October 18, 2010 at 1:30pm in Courtroom L. Assuming it is up for trial, the States Atty should be sending out subpoenas to bike club…

This is brilliant! And it explains SO MUCH!
Not to be a broken record, but you, too, should complain to the county board. If you want recycling, and the county is not providing it, then that’s the place to direct the complaint. For far too long, the county board and the city councils have focused…
I live in a housing community in a part of Urbana that is not considered within the city limits. The garbage company the community uses does not take recyling; therefore, I have used the Hagan St. facilities for two years. When it closes, I would like to…

I would be interested to hear more about the “word on the street”—how are individual hauling companies fulfilling their promise to recycle?
It sounds as if you should direct your concerns toward the Champaign County Board, aka the most dysfunctional board of its type in the nation. Perhaps if the ISWDA had not tried to locate a recycling facility in wetlands a number of years ago, there’d be county recycling now.
In response to Grouchy92: I don’t think the rural folks feel a sense of entitlement at all!! You have no idea how appreciative they are that they have been able to use the center up until now. If anyone had asked them, the majority would probably have…

take two seconds to do this. this dude works hard.
What I also like about the Hessel to Centennial run is that I can easily make it a 10 miler (if I run to Hessel and back when I’m done and add an extra loop at Centennial) and still be at most two miles from home. I’ve…
I’m not sure the graphic is for State St. I drive down it daily and there is no parking on the far west side where the bike lines are. Looks to me that parking will only be allowed on the east side of the street, two car…
This is a great list—thanks. I find the run between Hessel and Centennial to be incredibly boring, excepting the few blocks of nice homes, which I admit make for interesting scenery. Have you been to Homer Lake? They seem to have some great trails, though none are…

Speaking of regular commutes getting safer- White Street now open over the great divide east First Street. Woo Hoo!
I’m not sure that’s what Fred is saying. But the response of “You should just be happy to have a job!“ is a far too common excuse for employers’ bad treatment of workers. It’s also way too common in C-U.
@Fred While I agree that if your employer is treating you badly (e.g. shitty shifts, not honoring break/meal times, or just generally being an asshole) you should look for something else. However, as we all will experience at some point or another, we sometimes have to take…
I was very excited to see this lane put in place. This area is one of my regular, and sometimes scary, routes.
Not that they aren’t great mash-ups, but I’ve seen them twice in concert and was just frankly kind of bored. Probably won’t be going tonight. Maybe I just don’t like fun.
I’d love to see DESAFINADO performing there! They play Brazilian music…Bossa Nova. Great band! www.desafinado-music.com Angela

You can probably tuck in thinly sliced Romas. But for anything juicier like cherries, brandywines, etc., I would go with Pepin’s method of combining them with bread chunks. Zucchini contains a lot of water, too, so you’re probably best to use it solo or with onions. Saute…

You mean, once they’ve paid $140 worth of nickels and dimes in one calendar year the CPL issues them a waiver? I’ll bet you’d get little argument from the CPL.
Neat article, neat guy. In central IL however, there is little difference between Lincoln and Rambo (the C02 you just inhaled was ACTUALLY in Lincoln’s lungs once - seriously, i had a nice Urbana resident tell me once the old tree in her front yard was gnarled…
