Savoy approves Triptych’s permit
Last night, The Village of Savoy Board of Trustees voted 5-1 in favor of approving Triptych Brewing's special use permit. This comes after much speculation and concern from local business owner(s) and neighborhood residents about noise, saftey, and other issues.

Local badass author Jean Thompson given Pulitzer "lip service" in NY Times
Seeing as how the Pulitzer didn't go to any work of Fiction this year, some of the better experts out there decided to award it themselves. Our very own Jean Thompson was given some major props in the New York Times today as a result, with NYT Book Review Editor Gregory Cowles naming her The Year We Left Home as his choice for the award:
With that in mind, one book that might have broken through the committee’s stalemate this year is “The Year We Left Home,” by Jean Thompson. This ambitious, expansive novel opens at a wedding in small-town Iowa in 1973 and closes in the same small town 30 years later; in between, in chapters that hold their own as stand-alone stories, it follows the members of the Erickson family as they fumble their various ways through life. ... Anyone who thinks the Pulitzer committee messed up — who believes they did a disservice to literature by ignoring the three excellent finalists and every other work of American fiction published in 2011 — could do worse than reading “The Year We Left Home” as a consolation prize.
No surprise really. She's kind of totally amazing.

Nerdiest space launch of all time set for Saturday, May 5 in Urbana
A student organization at the University of Illinois called Space for All has joined forces with a California entrepreneur to do something not at all predictable and send a high-altitude weather balloon to space manned by famed captains Kirk and Picard. According to the University News Bulletin:
University of Illinois students are counting down to the scheduled launch Saturday (May 5) of an enterprising project: a high-altitude balloon carrying models of “Star Trek” captains James Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard into space. Their mission: to record 3-D video, to seek out new heights and to boldly go where no action figure has gone before.
This nerdy quest began with this Kickstarter campaign and will come to fruition this Saturday in Urbana. The Kickstarter project is still live, so if you feel like adding to the already $6,191 already donated to this project you better move at, like, warpspeed over the next two hours and do so.

Snell and the little Hitlers of the neighborhood association need to chill out. Legitimate businesses should have the freedom to exist without having to endure the slings and arrows of ignorant and misguided opposition.
And without bloodshed. Sounds like the Savoy trustees aren’t as narrow-minded as some of their whiny pants constituents. Do you think quack Snell is already planning an asinine counterattack or is he still laying low after those “threats” against his person?
Dollars to waffles says the study session will conclude that there is parking available in the Hill Street Parking Deck.
I can see requiring them to plug meters where they park, but the license fee thing sure sounds like some established business doesn’t like the competition and has an in with the city gummint staff.
This is pretty much ridiculous. However, I would hope that local businesses that aren’t opposed would step up and allow the Crave Truck in their private parking lots. That won’t solve the licensing issue though… (Insert not-so-subtle reference to Snell being behind the grand conspiracy to kill…

I also got to visit Big Grove Tavern during the soft open and definitely enjoyed the pork belly the most of all the dishes I sampled. The cheesy grits and the vinegary pickled vegetables were a perfect compliment to the rich pork belly.
The Alan Partridge lookalike on the right in the first small photo has nothing to condescend to anyone about. AH HA!

Yeah, I’d agree that Transporter Room 3 is the worst house venue I’ve ever seen.
Food trucks are the start-up, small businesses of the future for those unable to afford real estate. No surprise, that merchants who pay rent, utilities, and maintenance on a property would despise the traveling competition. Or developers who build more empty retail spaces would want to close…
Not so much far-right Tea Party as a balanced, moderate viewpoint between letting businesses succeed and protecting society with reasonable regulations. In spite of what the city reps are saying, the interpretation of policy on this issue certainly has changed. Letting a business start up under one…
I think it’s neat that SP has turned rightward, now espousing a Tea Party-style frustration with government regulations & taxes.
This makes me so sad. (Happy to live in Urbana, though!) Crave Truck has been a GREAT addition to the food choices in C-U, and it’d be a travesty to chase them away. This town should be supporting small businesses. I’m glad to hear that they’ll still…
*slow. clap.* Still offering no threat of intelligence…. I know I said I thought you should just write this whole column yourself next year, Isaac, but now that you’ve gone and taken a “part deux” run at it, I’d like to modify my request: Best Music 2013,…
Actually, it’s kind of nice, the quiet. John Heoffleur’s engaging commentary/dialogue is sorely missed, however. Okay, almost 24 hours later and I finally got Issac’s Summer joke. I’m an idiot.
Swap the dog for a fire pit and it sounds like you’re writing about my back yard. Very nice.
