RIP Terry Masar of Nature’s Table, and so much more…
There's not much information out there, but I learned this morning that Terry Masar has passed away.
On a personal note, Terry represented Urbana so well, as a venue owner in Nature's Table — the last true jazz and blues club that C-U had all to its own — and then again as a restaurateur, at Sweet Betsy's.
He was a wonderful man, and a great friend to myself, my family and so many, many others. He leaves behind a wondeful family, with so much talent, one could compare them to the Royal Tenenbaums.
And goddamnit if he didn't make the best cinnamon rolls and sandwiches in town for a very long time; I'd do anything for one of his massive Gondolette hoagies right now.
In 2007, Paul Young did a small feature on him for Smile Politely when he was running the deli at Sunsinger Wine and Spirits.

Our best wishes go out to the Masar family. He brought to life so many people, and his legacy will live on, for years and years to come.

Terry was a beautiful, gentle, fun human being. He truly loved the music and the musicians, and created a unique place for us to play. We love you, Terry!

Terry introduced me to a lot in this world: good music, Anchor Porter, healthy eating. He took a chance on me and gave me a job. I didn’t always do my job well, but he hung in there with me. Thanks for taking a chance on me, Terry. I learned a lot from you, and the Table opened my world to a lot of great things in life. I wouldn’t be the same person without those experiences.

This is so sad, I can’t beleive it. Terry was such such a nice man, so good natured. Rest in peace, Terry. Many, many people will miss you and think about you with very fond memories.

Thanks a million for loving music, food and life as much as you did. You contributed hugely to all of us by giving us musicians a place to play, listen and learn. The table was Shelly’s and your vision and was the most meaningful part of my college experience. Thanks for that and being the beautiful person you were. We’ll all miss you Terry. Peace!

First beer in Champaign. Nature’s Table.
First live music experience in Champaign. Nature’s Table.
Awesome memories. Thanks Terry.

One of the funniest guys I ever met. This is very sad, and he will be missed. Reports are there will be an autopsy today. RIP, you crazy punter.

So many memories of a warm, loving person who contributed so much to all of us. A great loss, but his contributions to CU remain with all of us. Thanks, Terry.

Terry was a good man. What a great sense of humor! He had a strong life force. He worked hard and played hard. A big heart, with a million dollar smile, and open arms. He gave of himself to the artists, musicians, friends, jazz, the food, and the community. A great comedian, his own man, who cared about what matters, Terry is one who can truly say “I did it my way…”
To the Masar Family, the spirit of Nature’s Table, and to those who knew him, he will be missed.
Fun guy. Good observer of local ongoings. Light-hearted. Enjoyed a pint of the Irish.
And in one of the most unlikely of juxtapositions, the little fella was once the MVP of the Fighting Illini football team. Weird.
I didn’t see Terry all that often, so I think I’ll just go ahead and imagine that he’s still around.

Hey Terry, I’ll miss you and you’ll be always in my heart.
At first, I didn’t like or trust Terry. Juan agreed…we thought he was kissing ass all the time. But the weeks and months before and after we opened One Main provided a strange, bewildering sea change in our hearts. We couldn’t believe it. He worked his ass off. And he was really THAT NICE.
After a freak fryer accident, which left his hand bubbling, I ordered him to leave work and go to the hospital. He turned, looked me in the eye, and said: “Make me, kid.”
Terry, next time I’m at a Mexico-Poland match, I’m yelling ‘POLSKA!’ at the top of my lungs, even if I’m surrounded by thousands of pissed off Mexicans. You were an amazing friend and example…and I miss you dearly.

I saw Terry just this past Friday. He was his usual cheerful & friendly self. The comments above begin to do justice to a truly decent human being. Terry was deserving of more breaks than he got while he was on this sphere, but through it all, he was a kind and genuine soul who gave so much. For once, when we say that the place will be poorer without him, it is neither trite no flowery. He was an original. I was lucky to have gotten to know him. Rest in peace, friend.
I too bumped into him just a few weeks back. One of the most likeable people I’ve ever met. It’ll be a real bummer to know he’s not around anymore.

I worked at Sun Singer with Terry. I did the wedding pictures of one of his daughters. I learned one thing form Terry “always with a smile” . I would feel down, and he would give me a slice of Tomme de Savoie. He was a “genuine” person. Like they don’t make them anymore. I will miss you Terry ...Merde ! Great guy, great Human Being. I will Miss You Mon Ami!
I am a little surprised by how dispirited I am by Terry’s death. I don’t recall the last time I saw him. Two months ago? Two years ago? Terry used to deliver those cinnamon rolls to Caffe Paradiso. I had the happy, frequent coincidence of arriving at Paradiso about the same time Terry would be dropping off his wares. (Ooh, cinnamon rolls!) It wasn’t long before looked forward to bumping into him. (Ooh, Terry!)
I’m truly sorry I won’t be able to honor Terry Wednesday at the Iron Post, or Thursday at Buvons. Terry was a good egg, which may seem trite, but we could all do with a few more in our lives.

When I first go to town in the late 1990s, I took dance lessons at White St. Art Center, which was started by Terry and Shelley. So saddened to hear of his passing.

I feel lucky to have seen Terry this past summer at the Nature’s Table Reunion show at the High Dive. We had a chance to catch up and re-connect. He even gave me a teeshirt in the parking lot after the show. He seemed really happy. The scene at Nature’s Table in the late 1980’s are some of my favorite memories.
I used to live just down the street from Sweet Betsy’s. Loved walking over for a lazy lunch. How terribly sad that Masur has left us….

A dear friend is gone. I just saw him 2 weeks ago and a few days later dropped of a few pumkins to brighten up his yard. We always joked about gardening, traveling, sports, and our children. Like a great father, he was intinsely proud of his kids. He will be missed.

Terry touched so many lives so well….
Illini MVP; we teased him after the Ohio State game and all the attempts he “enjoyed”.... he was a crackerjack QB too, at OPRF…. what a guy….
OPRF = Oak Park-River Forest, I presume?

Nature’s Table was a warm, affordable place which welcomed everyone. Many of us took our young children there to enjoy the music and friendship. We loved the red beans and rice which cost a buck. Carrie Newcomer was married to the drummer back then. Terry and Shelley were young and happy and all about sharing the joy with the community. Through the years since, Terry has been a kind and positive presence and loving family man. Such a beautiful family. May you all be comforted.

Snell and the little Hitlers of the neighborhood association need to chill out. Legitimate businesses should have the freedom to exist without having to endure the slings and arrows of ignorant and misguided opposition.
And without bloodshed. Sounds like the Savoy trustees aren’t as narrow-minded as some of their whiny pants constituents. Do you think quack Snell is already planning an asinine counterattack or is he still laying low after those “threats” against his person?
Dollars to waffles says the study session will conclude that there is parking available in the Hill Street Parking Deck.
I can see requiring them to plug meters where they park, but the license fee thing sure sounds like some established business doesn’t like the competition and has an in with the city gummint staff.
This is pretty much ridiculous. However, I would hope that local businesses that aren’t opposed would step up and allow the Crave Truck in their private parking lots. That won’t solve the licensing issue though… (Insert not-so-subtle reference to Snell being behind the grand conspiracy to kill…

I also got to visit Big Grove Tavern during the soft open and definitely enjoyed the pork belly the most of all the dishes I sampled. The cheesy grits and the vinegary pickled vegetables were a perfect compliment to the rich pork belly.
The Alan Partridge lookalike on the right in the first small photo has nothing to condescend to anyone about. AH HA!

Yeah, I’d agree that Transporter Room 3 is the worst house venue I’ve ever seen.
Food trucks are the start-up, small businesses of the future for those unable to afford real estate. No surprise, that merchants who pay rent, utilities, and maintenance on a property would despise the traveling competition. Or developers who build more empty retail spaces would want to close…
Not so much far-right Tea Party as a balanced, moderate viewpoint between letting businesses succeed and protecting society with reasonable regulations. In spite of what the city reps are saying, the interpretation of policy on this issue certainly has changed. Letting a business start up under one…
I think it’s neat that SP has turned rightward, now espousing a Tea Party-style frustration with government regulations & taxes.
This makes me so sad. (Happy to live in Urbana, though!) Crave Truck has been a GREAT addition to the food choices in C-U, and it’d be a travesty to chase them away. This town should be supporting small businesses. I’m glad to hear that they’ll still…
*slow. clap.* Still offering no threat of intelligence…. I know I said I thought you should just write this whole column yourself next year, Isaac, but now that you’ve gone and taken a “part deux” run at it, I’d like to modify my request: Best Music 2013,…
Actually, it’s kind of nice, the quiet. John Heoffleur’s engaging commentary/dialogue is sorely missed, however. In lieu of someone intelligent saying something, I’ve compiled a list of Honourable Mentions: BEST ROCK BAND: Take Care ::these gentlemen have four completely different sets at their disposal right now (which…

Okay, almost 24 hours later and I finally got Issac’s Summer joke. I’m an idiot.
Swap the dog for a fire pit and it sounds like you’re writing about my back yard. Very nice.
